12 Early Signs of Orthodontic Problems in Children

12 Early Signs of Orthodontic Problems in Children
Because orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth or teeth while a child still has primary or “baby” teeth present, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends all children get a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age seven.
Some problems are not so subtle, and you may notice them early on. If you see any of the following signs in your child, please make an appointment immediately. (If your child is younger than seven, it is not necessary to wait till his or her seventh birthday to visit our office.) We want to identify any problems as early as possible so that we can implement the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time for your child’s individual needs.
  1. Early or late loss of baby teeth
  2. Difficulty in chewing or biting
  3. Mouth breathing
  4. Finger sucking or other oral habits
  5. Crowding, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
  6. Speech difficulty
  7. Jaws that shift or make sounds
  8. Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth
  9. Teeth that stick out too far
  10. Teeth that meet in an abnormal way or don't meet at all
  11. Upper and lower jaws that don’t line up
  12. Grinding or clenching of teeth

  1. Hi there! I am glad to stop by your site and know more about Orthodontists. Keep it up! This is a good read. I will be looking forward to visit your page again and for your other posts as well. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Orthodontists in your area.
A number of dental schools and hospitals offer advanced education in the specialty of Orthodontics to dentists seeking postgraduate education. The courses range from two to three years (with the majority being 3 years) of full-time classes in the theoretical and practical aspects of orthodontics together with clinical experience. Generally, admission is based on an application process followed by an extensive interviewing process by the institution, in order to select the best candidates. Candidates usually have to contact the individual school directly for the application process.

  8. It is true that if you have your children see an orthodontist that doctor can help your children's permanent teeth to grow in straight. This often times will save you the effort of buying expensive braces. Seeing an orthodontist is never a bad idea.

  9. Orthodontics has come a long way. Braces used to consist of a steel band went around each individual tooth like a ring. Technology has took this step further. Now a days Invisalign invisible brace do the job comfortably. In Orthodontics metal bands have been replaced with brackets which are bonded directly to the front teeth. Dentist recommend to take their babies for dental check-up.

  10. Being able to identify the early warning signs of orthodontic problems is a huge help. We read an article like this a while back, and just a couple of weeks later noticed a couple of these signs in our son. Sure enough, the dentist confirmed the issue, and they were able to correct it quickly. Thiago | http://www.jensenorthodontics.com/en/

  11. I am glad that there are pretty clear indicators for dental correction. Our son sucks his thumb and from looking at how his teeth are coming in he is going to need braces. Knowing early that he will be getting them gives us time to find an orthodontist that can help correct them when the time come. It also helps us to prepare financially for it.

  13. These would have really helped my parents with my teeth. I always had interesting teeth but my parents never really thought I needed braces. I eventually got braces and now my teeth are finally normal and don't bother me. http://www.wardorthodontics.com

  15. I think my son is displaying some of these symptoms. I didn't think that he had or will have dental problems. It's interesting that you can use these symptoms to foresee what sort of orthodontic work will need to be done in the future. This is so helpful. Now I can plan ahead for braces or something for my son. http://www.woosterorthodontics.com/for-children-and-adults.php

  17. I never would have thought some of these were indications of orthodontic problems. My son sucked his thumb for a little longer than was normal, but he's completely stopped now. I wonder if I should get him checked by an orthodontist, just to make sure there isn't any long-term problems.

  18. I'm so glad that I came across this post. When I read through these indications they reminded me of my grandson. He has a lot of trouble chewing and his jaws don't line up. I had no idea that these indicated an orthodontic problem.

  20. Catching potential problems in our children's teeth early on is pretty important if they are going to have healthy teeth. It is important for them to form good habits from an early age, which go a long way into adulthood. I would suggest that if you do notice any of the problems listed above, that you go see an orthodontist or a dentist. http://www.aboutfaceortho.com.au/meet-dr-stevan-saicich/
